Digital platforms also provide opportunities for peer support and community engagement, which are crucial components of mental health recovery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of online therapy surged as many sought help for anxiety, depression, and stress. These tools are particularly useful for individuals who may not have immediate access to in-person therapy. “Apps like Headspace and Calm provide guided meditation and mindfulness exercises that can help reduce anxiety and improve overall mental well-being,” says digital health expert Dr. Sarah Adams.
Whereas this presents great potential for producing innovative and scalable interventions for anxiety disorders, capitalizing upon this opportunity requires continued rigorous research. Overall, the digital health movement is one of the fastest moving and rapidly evolving sectors in health research. However, direct comparisons have not been conducted for most anxiety disorders, and there has been some criticism of the quality of the studies evaluating VRET, especially the use of small sample size and the lack of control groups. Until recently, expensive hardware and software have limited the use of VR in the mainstream treatment of anxiety disorders.

The paper does, however, present less-discussed benefits with new concepts such as ‘poly-digital’, where many different apps/features (e.g. a sleep app, mood logging app and a mindfulness app, etc.) can each address different factors of wellbeing, perhaps resulting in an aggregation of marginal gains. In summary, AI innovations hold immense promise for transforming mental healthcare. Can AI truly transform mental healthcare? AI can augment, but not entirely replace, the human element in mental healthcare. Can AI revolutionize mental healthcare, or does it fall short of genuine human connection?
Such apps may also recognize changes in behavior patterns that signal an episode of mania, depression, or psychosis before it occurs. Research and engineering teams are combining their skills to address a wide range of mental health concerns. Although apps are becoming more appealing and user-friendly, we need more information on their effectiveness. Addressing potential problems will be essential to ensuring that new apps provide benefits without causing harm. Mental health technology offers great opportunities but also raises concerns. Some apps are stand-alone programs designed to improve memory or thinking skills.
